One of the most vulnerable areas and most common roof system problems involves chimney flashing. A saddle flashing (cricket) can be beneficial to wide chimneys to prevent standing water and leaves from collecting between the roof and the chimney, dormer windows or skylights.
Flashings seal the roof system edges, perimeters, penetrations, walls, valleys, drains and any other area where the actual roof covering is interrupted or terminated (any lapse in the roof system where water, insects, or debris may enter). If not properly sealed, oxidization and loose or deteriorating flashings could lead to roof leaks.
Two key things to remember this spring and again in the fall months:
“Chimney flashing is especially prone to tearing as the chimney
settles independently from the house.”

“Flashings can be easily repaired or replaced by PERTEX Roofing, but we offer our customers ‘better roofing solutions’ by adding an additional ice and water barrier.”

If you suspect that your roof is damaged, here is a basic list of what to look for:
- Leaning Chimney
- Loose or missing flashing
- Damaged bricks, cap or cracked joints
