Why did my roof change color?

What happen to my beautiful roof?
If you live in Texas, you know that the clouds dumped a lot of rain that caused major problems statewide.  What you may not know is the annual precipitation in Texas last year reached 80 inches or nearly 7 feet of rain, or in layman terms, as tall as a king size mattress.  Folks, this is more than a lot of rain, this is rain that has the potential to ruin your roof.  Combine last years extreme rain with hail and high winds - you better make sure you have the best protection on top of your home and better roofing solutions.

Why did my roof change color?
There’s no argument that over time and early in the life cycle of your roof, it can slowly but surely start to transform.  You might see ugly black streaks caused by algae (Gloeocapsa Magma) that grows from a dot to a spot to a streak.  Older algae decompose and hold moisture, which enables the entire colony to grow even more rapidly. Homeowners often say that they noticed a spot, and in a matter of months, half the roof shingles were covered. Increased moisture levels lead to the growth of lichen, mold and even moss - hiding a beautifully designed roof color if the problem is not inspected and repaired by a professional roofer.

What can I do to keep my roof looking pretty?
Lets face it, all roofing shingles are not the same.  Some shingle manufacturers add only a 3 to 5 percent blend of copper granules.  Copper?  Yes, the amount of copper granules used per shingle varies from one manufacturer to another.  This means only very light coverage on the shingles, which cannot help prevent algae from growing and black streaks from forming in the gaps.  You may have learned back in high school that the liver, muscle and bone are the main areas where copper is found in humans.  But when it comes to building materials, copper is used as a conductor of heat, electricity, and a defense against algae.

Unlike other algae resistant shingles, Atlas shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector have a minimum 10 percent blend of copper granules distributed across every shingle. Independent third party testing verifies this process — just one of the many requirements that make Atlas shingles worthy of the Scotchgard™ name.  Moreover, to ensure a roof remains algae-free from top to bottom, the copper granules are uniformly distributed across accessory shingles, including the hip & ridge shingles. This leaves no gaps in coverage and less of an opportunity for black streaks to grow.  Simply stated, Scotchgard™ Protector is built in so that the color you choose is the color you keep.
